煤岩学是把煤作为有机岩石，以物理方法为主研究煤的物质成分、结构、性质、成因及合理利用的学科。是煤地质学的一个分支。1924年,R.波托涅在《普通煤岩学概论》中第一次使用煤岩学一词。显微镜下研究煤是煤岩学的主要手段。
