热力系统是指人为分割出来的以作热力学分析的对象。分析对象的周围物体统称为外界。系统和外界之间的分界面叫做边界。热动力装置的工作就是工质从高温热源吸取热能，将其中一部分转化为机械能而做功，并把余下的另一部分传给低温热源的过程。热力系统如果和外界只有热或功的能量交换而无物质的变换，则称为闭口系统，闭口系统内的质量保持恒定不变；如果热力系统和外界不仅有能量交换而且有物质的交换，则称为开口系统；当热力系统和外界既无能量交换又无物质的交换的，则称为孤立系统；当热力系统和外界间的作用仅限于无热量的交换时，则称为绝热系统。
