烧结是不能直接加入高炉的铁（精）矿粉造块的主要方法之一。通过烧结，还可以改善原料冶金性能。烧结也应用于有色金属冶炼过程。有色金属硫化物精矿的烧结，除造块外，还有脱硫的作用。通过物质的传递，其总体积收缩，密度增加，最后成为具有某种显微结构的致密多晶烧结体，这种现象称为烧结。
