紫砂是一种炻器，是一种介于陶器与瓷器之间的陶瓷制品，其特点是结构致密，接近瓷化，强度较大，颗粒细小， 断口为贝壳状或石状，但不具有瓷胎的半透明性。宜兴紫砂器胎质具有这种特性，而且，于器表光挺平整之中，含有小颗粒状的变化，表现出一种砂质效果。
