火炕又简称炕，或称大炕，是北方居室中常见的一种取暖设备，东北人也把它引入了皇宫内。盛京皇宫内多设火炕，而且一室内设几铺，这样既解决了坐卧起居问题，又可以通过如此多的炕面散发热量，保持室内较高的温度。如在东厢的关雎宫，一宫内就有七铺炕面，麟趾、衍庆、永福各宫中也是如此。而且不仅在各宫室内这样，甚至作为值更人员歇息住宿的崇政殿两翊门也铺设有火炕与火地，可见皇宫内铺设火炕之普遍。
