天然或人工含有以活性氧化硅、活性氧化铝为主的矿物质材料，经磨成细粉后与石灰加水混合，不但能在空气中硬化、而且能在水中继续硬化者，都称为火山灰质混合材料，具有玻璃相和微晶相的两重性质。最初火山灰是指火山爆发喷出地面的岩浆，因地面温度低、压力小而聚冷生成的玻璃质物质，后人们发现在石灰中掺入火山爆发时喷出的“火山灰”后，不但能在空气中硬化，而且也能在水中硬化，获得与一般水泥相似的水硬性质。这说明火山灰质混合材料是一种活性混合材，它可以作为硅酸盐水泥的混合材料，制成火山灰质硅酸盐水泥和粉煤灰硅酸盐水泥
