湖羊是太湖平原重要家畜之一，也是我国一级保护地方畜禽品种。其为稀有白色羔皮羊品种，具有早熟、四季发情、一年二胎、每胎多羔、泌乳性能好、生长发育快、改良后产肉性能理想、耐高温高湿等优良性状。 湖羊也是世界著名的多胎绵羊品种，在2000年和2006年先后两次被农业部列入了《国家畜禽遗传资源保护目录》。
