湖笔，与徽墨、宣纸、端砚并称为“文房四宝”，是中华文明悠久灿烂的重要象征。湖笔之乡在善琏镇。当地有笔祖蒙恬庙。相传秦始皇的大将蒙恬“用枯木为管，鹿毛为柱，羊毛为被（外衣）”，发明了毛笔。 2006年，湖笔制作技艺入选国家非物质文化遗产名录。
