温跃层（Thermocline）是位于海面以下100—200 米左右的、温度和密度有巨大变化的薄薄一层，是上层的薄暖水层与下层的厚冷水层间出现水温急剧下降的层。 由于在开阔海域，盐度几乎是稳定的，而压力对密度只有很轻微的影响，因此温度就成为影响海水密度的一个最重要的因素。大洋表面的海水温度较高，因此它的密度就比深处的冷水要小。 温度和密度在温跃层发生迅速变化，使得温跃层成为生物以及海水环流的一个重要分界面。
