淤积是对于某一河段，若上游输来的泥沙数量，大于本河段的挟沙能力，多余的泥沙就会沉积下来，泥砂堆积，使床面升高的现象，就是淤积。一般来说，淤积较易发生在河床比降小、水流小的河段。淤积是输沙不平衡的表现，泥沙在河床、港湾、航道内的堆积，往往使河床变形，港湾於浅，航道堵塞。
