海绵组织(spongy mesophyll) 是位于栅栏组织与下表皮之间的同化组织，含叶绿体较少，使叶片背面色泽浅于腹面。细胞的大小和形状不规则，有时形成短臂状突起并互相连接而形成较大的细胞间隙。叶片的同化组织中的细胞间隙与气孔器的孔下室一起，形成曲折而连盘的通气系统，有利于光合作用及气体交换。
