狭义的海底滑坡通常指海底未固结的松软沉积物或存在软弱结构面的岩石，在重力作用下沿斜坡发生的快速滑动过程，包括平移滑坡、旋转滑坡；广义的海底滑坡一般涵盖海底沉积物搬运的各种过程，还包括蠕动、崩塌与重力流（碎屑流、颗粒流、液化流、浊流）现象。一般而言，海底滑坡是不同类型、不同时期滑坡的复合体。而且搬运过程中，其结构特征与力学性质具有时变性，伴随类型转变。
海底滑坡(Submarine Landslide)极为常见,其在形态和成因上都是多种多样的。破坏的地形形态常因地震剖面上固有的垂直放大而给人以假象,并导致命名上的混淆。
