活字，指通常用金属、木质或塑料制作的长方块，上面有凸起的字母，着墨后印出字来，用于排版印刷的反文单字。 中国北宋庆历年间(1041～1048),毕升发明泥活字，是活字的开端。以后又发展了锡活字、木活字、铜活字、铅活字等。其中木活字对后世影响较大，仅次于雕版（见彩图）。朝鲜古代曾有过铁活字。现代铅合金活字是德国人J.谷登堡于15世纪50年代所创制。
