活动文档是指能够提供了一种连续更新屏幕内容的技术,这种技术把创建文档的工作移到浏览器端进行。当浏览器请求一个活动文档时，服务器就返回这个活动文档程序的副本或脚本，然后就在浏览器端运行,此时，活动文档程序可与用户直接交互，以便连续地更新屏幕的显示内容。虽然活动文档克服了静态文档内容固定不变的不足，但活动文档一旦建立，它所包含的内容也就被固定下来而无法及时刷新。另外，活动文档也无法提供像动画那样的显示效果。
