酶活力的大小、即酶量的多少用酶活力单位（U）（active unit）表示。1961年国际生物化学学会酶学委员会提出采用统一的“国际单位”（IU）来表示酶的活力，规定为：在最适条件（25℃）下，每分钟内催化1微摩尔（μmol）底物转化为产物所需的酶量定为一个活力单位，即1IU = 1μmol /min。
