当发生暴雨或融雪时，在流域各处所形成的径流，都依其远近先后汇入河槽，这时河水流量开始增加，水位相应上涨。随着汇入河网的径流从上游向下游汇集，河水流量继续增大。当流域大部分高强度的径流汇入时，河水流量增至最大值，称此时流量为洪峰流量，单位为立方米/秒。
洪峰流量(Peak discharge):一次洪水过程中的最大瞬时流量。 洪水总量(Flood volume):一次洪水过程中或在给定时段内通过河流 某一断面的洪水体积。
