波前是指波在介质中传播时，某时刻刚刚开始位移的质点构成的面。它代表某时刻波能量到达的空间位置，它是运动着的。波前与射线成正交（但是在各向异性的介质中如双折射晶体，光线一般不和波前垂直）。因此，使用射线或波前来研究波是等效的。根据波前的形状一般可以把波分为球面波、平面波，柱面波等。
