法然（1133～1212）平安末期～镰仓前期僧人，净土宗开山祖师。美作（冈山县）押领使漆间时国之子，幼年与父亲死别，出家比叡山，先后从师皇圆、叡空，得到“法然”之号，又号源空。为发扬末世的佛法，创立净土宗，主张“专修念佛”，直接向武士、庶民甚至女子传播教义。九条兼实、后白河法皇等贵族也皈依门下，应兼实的请求撰写有《撰择本愿念佛集》。后来受到旧佛教的迫害，被流放土佐（高知县），赦免返京以后死于大谷。他在日本佛教史上具有重要作用，深受日本人民敬爱。
