J. Habermas有感于因为工具理性过度膨胀所产生「意义失落」及「自由失落」的异化(alienation)现象，致使人类丧失自主和反省之能力，乃提出「沟通理性」之主张，俾使个人能从系统扭曲的沟通情境或僵化封闭的意识型态束缚中获致解放。依据J. Habermas的观点，沟通理性的基本内涵，可归纳为下列七点：
