物理学家Bak，汤超，Wiesenfeld用著名的“沙堆模型”（sandpile model）以形象地说明自组织临界态的形成及特点。他们曾设想过一个理想实验：通过装置让沙子一次一粒均匀地落在桌上，形成逐渐增高的一小堆，借助慢速录像和计算机模仿等手段精确地计算沙堆顶部落下一粒沙会带动多少沙粒移动； 初始阶段，沙子下落对沙堆整体的影响不大； 当沙堆的高度达到一定程度以后，一颗沙子的落下可能引发整个沙堆的崩塌。实验结果产生了“自组织临界”理论：沙堆达到“临界”状态后，所有沙都处于一个整体的状态， 新下落的沙子会在周围产生扰动，这些扰动虽微细，却能够在整个沙堆中传递，使得沙堆的结构产生变化， 沙堆的结构将随每粒新沙落下而变得愈加脆弱，最终发生沙堆的崩塌。在到达临界态后，沙崩规模的大小与其出现的频率呈幂函数关系。
