沉降流指地球的岩石圈中对流的沉隐没带所在的地区。隐没带存在于聚合板块边缘。海洋板块扩张到大陆板块边缘,因为海洋板块较重,会沉入大陆板块之下,形成聚合板块边缘。地球的岩石圈、海洋板块、沉积层以及被困住的水份就是经由隐没带回收到地函深处的。 海洋表层流场水平辐合、堆积,使表层海水下沉的流动。在外海的反气旋流涡中心和锋面附近,发生沉降流,在大陆或岛屿迎风的沿岸地区,当风向与海岸垂直时,风力的吹刮使迎风的沿岸地区发生增水现象,也会导致沿岸区表层海水下沉。沉降流中心温度略高,盐度略低,营养盐少。
良好的固体特性。低浓度固体会快速沉降,快速脱水;在峰流时不会出现二沉池冲刷问题。
