沉泥池也称为沉沙池，在多泥沙河流上取水时，虽在取水口采取了防沙措施，但水的含沙量和粒径还不能完全满足用水的要求。因此，可在进水口下游设置沉沙池，通过扩大过水断面，减小流速，沉淀不符合用水要求的泥沙。灌溉用水时，应沉淀粒径大于0.03～0.05 mm的泥沙。对发电引水，沉淀粒径大于0.25 mm的泥沙即可。沉沙池的沉沙率一般为80%～90%。
