金属钝化理论认为，钝化是由于表面生成覆盖性良好的致密的钝化膜。大多数钝化膜是由金属氧化物组成，故称氧化膜。如铁钝化膜为γ-Fe2O3，Fe3O4，铝钝化膜为无孔的γ-Al2O3等。氧化膜厚度一般为10-9～10-10m。一些还原性阴离子，如Cl-对氧化膜破坏作用较大。氧化膜中存在两种类型的应力:氧化膜恒温生长时产生的生长应力和温度变化时由于金属与氧化物的热膨胀系数不同而产生的热应力。
