气象导航，根据天气、海况预报、船舶性能、技术条件及航行任务，为船舶优选横渡大洋的航线并保证付诸实现的全部技术。据此拟定的航线称为气象航线，它基本上位于大圆航线的两侧。气象导航由气象导航机构实施。该机构将拟定的最佳航线和风浪预报图推荐给离港前申请气象导航的船舶，在整个航行过程中，被导船在气象导航机构的指导下航行，并定时向导航机构报告船位和沿途观测到的气象和水文资料。被导船按照或参考导航机构的气象航线航行，直到安全到达目的港。
