气分一词在中医中主要有三处代指，一是指属气的范围的功能及活动，泛指属于气的范围的功能活动及病变，常相对于血分而言，如邪在气分、气分湿热等。二是卫气营血辩证中气分证的简称，温热病卫气营血辨证的实热阶段。以中焦阳明为主，包括肺、胆、脾、胃、大肠等脏腑，范围较广。三是《金匮要略》中气分病的简称。指寒气乘阳之虚而结于气分之病。《诸病源候论·气病诸候》：“夫气分者，由水饮搏于气，结聚所成，气之流行，常无壅滞，若有停积水饮搏于气，则气分结而住，故云气分。”
