比较研究是指比较心理学研究动物行为的基本方法。对两个或两个以上物种之间的行为进行比较分析，探索和阐明动物在长期适应环境过程中行为的进化历程。也是现代习性学和比较心理学的迫切任务。通常对亲缘相近的物种作比较，有时也对种系较远的物种作比较。如比较蜜蜂与人的社会行为等。按照进化论的观点，有机体的结构分为同源与可类比两类。
