正常椭球(水准椭球)面上的重力称为正常重力。正常重力值可由正常重力公式计算求得，正常重力值只与纬度有关，与经度无关，其极大值在两极，极小值在赤道。 假设地球是一个密度均匀而且光滑的理想椭球体，或是一个密度成层分布的光滑椭球体，在同一层内密度是均匀的、各层的界面也都是共焦旋转椭球面，则球面上各点的重力位或重力值可以根据地球的引力参数、地球长半径、扁度、自转角速度等计算得出，由此计算出的重力值称为正常重力值。
