横观各向同性现象在地质材料中比较常见，各向异性性状对岩体的应力一应变分析以及破坏力学行为有很重要的影响，国内外学者做了很多的研究工作。各向同性指物体的物理、化学等方面的性质不会因方向的不同而有所变化的特性，即某一物体在不同的方向所测得的性能数值完全相同，亦称均质性。 横观各向同性体是各向异性体的特殊情况。在岩石某一平面内的各方向弹性性质相同，这个面称为各向同性面，而垂直此面方向的力学性质是不同的，具有这种性质的物体称为横观各向同性体。
