其作法是用一块印花模子，刻出基本花纹，趁陶模胎尚未全干时，用印模在上面打印出一个个花纹，一般都打印成规整的四方连续图案。它的方法，有些象今天用一个单位纹样，拷贝成四方连续图案一样。从侯马发现的陶范花纹来看，大部分同一部位，同样花纹的印模，都只有一块，因而往往出现同组花纹反复的现象。说明当时已普遍采用印模花纹的技法。在春秋中晚期和战国时期，盛行的蟠虺、蟠螭纹，都采用此法印铸。以后一直影响到两汉，汉代砖刻大多也应用模印法制作。
