棘阿米巴多见于污染的土壤和水体中，现已分离到7个致病种，其中以卡氏棘阿米巴（A．castellanii）为多见。棘阿米巴入侵途径尚不完全清楚，已知可从皮肤伤口、穿透性角膜外伤、损伤的眼结膜或经呼吸道、生殖道等进入人体。多数寄生于脑、眼、皮肤等部位。
