是肱动脉的终支之一，较尺动脉稍小。桡动脉长约21.2cm，起端外径约0.3cm。肱动脉分出后，行向外下，先经肱桡肌与旋前圆肌之间，继而位于桡侧腕屈肌与肱桡肌之间，至桡骨下端斜过拇长展肌和拇短伸肌腱深面至手背后进入解部学鼻咽窝，穿第1掌骨间隙入手掌深部，分出拇主要动脉后，即与尺动脉掌深支吻合成掌深弓。桡动脉在桡骨下端与桡侧腕屈肌腱之间位置较浅，是扪脉和穿刺的理想部位。桡动脉有恒定的二静脉伴行。自肘窝中心以下2.5cm处向外下至桡骨茎突的内侧划一直线，为桡动脉的体表投影。
