核燃料后处理是对反应堆辐照过（即燃烧过）的核燃料所进行的化学处理。其目的是从中除去裂变产物，回收未用尽的和新生成的核燃料物质。 核燃料在反应堆中燃烧，不是一次燃尽的。为维持反应堆的正常运行，堆中要留有最低数量的核燃料；积累的裂变产物也会吸收中子而妨碍反应堆的正常运行。因此，核燃料在反应堆中燃烧一段时间后，就应从反应堆中卸出。卸出的核燃料经过后处理才有可能重新利用其中有用的物质。对核燃料循环来说，核燃料后处理是不可缺少的环节。
