柳兰是桃金娘目柳叶菜科多年生草本植物，高约1—1.3米。茎直立，通常不分枝。叶互生，披针形，总状花序顶生，伸长，花序轴被短柔毛，苞片线形，长1—2厘米，花大，两性，红紫色。根、茎、叶、花、果均含鞣质，可作栲胶原料。根状茎或全草入药，有小毒，能调经活血、消肿止痛，主治月经不调、骨折、关节扭伤。种子毛（种瘿）可制入造棉。花大而多，美丽，开花时间长，宜作观察植物。嫩叶可当菜吃。
