一般作为造山旋回。(orogenic cycle)或褶皱旋回(foldingcyele)的同义词使用。指一段地质时间内，活动带(地槽区域或沉降带)通过前造山幕，造山幕和后造山幕而演变成稳定的造山带或褶皱带。1886年法国地质学家贝特朗(M.Berfrand)用分析角度不整合的方法确定了地槽内，褶皱运动的旋回性，对西欧和北美不同的地槽区进行比较，划分出休伦，加里东，海西和阿尔卑斯等四个褶皱期或造山期;亦即四个构造旋回。其基本观点至今仍被许多地质学家所采用。
