杜仲已有2000多年的药用历史，传统用杜仲树皮入药。杜仲叶活性成分和药理作用与杜仲皮相似。《中华人民共和国药典》2005年版(一部)开始收载杜仲叶。杜仲叶微辛、温，归肝、肾经，具有补肝肾、强筋骨、降血压的功效，主治肝肾不足，腰膝酸软，筋骨痿弱等症。杜仲叶中含有丰富的营养物质，包括VB1、VE、β-胡萝卜素，17种游离氨基酸，锗、硒等15种微量元素。杜仲叶中的粗蛋白质含量高于玉米、谷、高粱和薯类，与大麦、小麦等相当。必需脂肪酸是维持机体正常代谢所不可缺少的，杜仲叶中含有质量分数为1.59%的亚油酸和45.85%的亚麻酸。杜仲叶的活性成分包括黄酮类、环烯醚萜类、苯丙素类、木脂素类、多糖类以及杜仲橡胶等。主要药理作用为降血压、降血脂、降血糖、抗炎抗病毒、抗疲劳、强筋健骨、抗衰老等。 据中国林科院统计，截止2015年，全国27个省区市杜仲资源保存面积为537万亩。每年杜仲叶产量约有上千万吨，杜仲叶资源丰富。
