本质论（德lehre vom Weson）是德国黑格尔用语。是指逻辑学的第二部分。具体概念所包含的各个规定（环节）的展开或分化。本质的东西不是直接显露于外，而是映现在他物中，间接地表现出来，思维要把握事物的本质，必须透过直接性的东西深入到它的背后或内里，即以它物为中介。所以它是“思想的反思性或间接性”本质的观点即是“反思的现点”。本质论范围内的概念不是直接的，而是间接的。相对的范畴是互相依存、互相联系的。要认识成对范畴的任何一方的本质必然要涉及与它相对立的另一方。本质论的规定（范畴）是“反思的规定”，成对范畴都是互相反映、互相转化，任何一方都为对方所反映，同时又反映了对方。本质论的概念发展经过三个阶段：“本质自身”、“现象”和“现实”。本质自身是本质自身中概念的相互反思，表现为同一，差异、队里、矛盾、根据，到根据就不仅是自身反思，而且反思他物，就过渡到现象。现象是本质的表现形式，说明具体事物的内容与形式及两者之间的内在关系，现实是本质与实存，或内与外的统一。
