未来指数 futurity index 在家畜中根据双亲的生活力或性状来估计下代家畜的生活力及性状时，大体上认为这些特性在遗传上的传递能力是父本和母本的生活力或性状之和的平均值，即用 =子代个体的平均值。 来表示，这就称为未来指数。反之，也可利用这个指数，根据测定子孙的生活力来推算父本的遗传能力，因此也称为双亲的中间指数（midparent index）。
