木栓层是由木栓形成层(phellogen) 向外分裂出来的细胞所组成的。木栓形成层向内分裂产生栓内层,栓内层的细胞壁较薄，细胞中常含叶绿体。木栓层、木栓形成层和栓内层共同构成周皮。周皮的内侧，往往还可产生新的木栓形成层，由新的木栓形成层再形成新的周皮保护层。每次新周皮形成时，其外方组织相继死亡，并逐渐累积增厚。周皮及其外方的毁坏组织，是粗老树干外围的保护结构。
形态特征：为高大的落叶乔木，成年树的树皮有发达的木栓层。
