木主，亦即载木主，系最早的故人替身物，就是说，当时人们用木简单剥雕成人形木偶，无字无图案，以象征死者，用以长久祭拜。后来经过很长时间的演化，最终才称“神主”“神位”，上面开始书写或雕琢文字，以及图案。
