期票是指由债务人对债权人开出的，承诺到期支付一定款项的债务证书。按照资本主义国家票据法的规定，期票到期如不是伪造的或过期的，债务人必须无条件偿付，否则债权人可诉诸法庭。期票在未到期前，可背书转让，作为支付手段或购买手段加入流通。在资本主义制度下，期票可以多次转让，转让后的期票到期不能偿付，背书人有付款的责任。期票在到期前也可向银行申请贴现，作为融通资金的工具。
