一个将要被控制的噪声场被称为初级声场，其声源为初级声源，所产生的噪声为初级噪声或初级声波。人为产生的、用于抵消初级噪声的“反”噪声称为次级噪声或次级声波，形成的声场为次级声场；产生次级噪声的作动器称为次级作动器，如果该作动器为声源，则称为次级声源；如果为力源，则称为次级力源。在空间某一点，通过初级声波与次级声波的相消性干涉达到降噪目的的噪声控制方式称为有源噪声控制。
