曲菌病由曲菌引起。曲菌是最常见的污染杂菌，种类很多，在人类曲菌病中，最常见的致病菌为烟曲菌。曲菌生长迅速，在潮湿霉烂的谷物、稻草或腐烂的枯树叶中繁殖很快。因此谷仓、土壤、空气中常有大量曲菌孢子，可引起原发性肺曲菌病。外界环境中的曲菌孢子主要通过呼吸道进入人体。吸入的曲菌孢子不一定在人体内繁殖引起疾病。
