《明史》是二十四史最后一部，共三百三十二卷，包括本纪二十四卷，志七十五卷，列传二百二十卷，表十三卷。它是一部纪传体断代史，记载了自朱元璋洪武元年（公元1368年）至朱由检崇祯十七年（公元1644年）二百多年的历史。其卷数在二十四史中仅次于《宋史》，但其修纂时间之久，用力之勤却大大超过了以前诸史。《明史》修成之后，得到后代史家的好评，但由于清朝的“文字狱”，也有不少曲笔隐讳之处。后世清史学家往往还是给清人所修的《明史》以较高的评价，如赵翼在《廿二史札记》卷31中说：“近代诸史自欧阳公《五代史》外，《辽史》简略，《宋史》繁芜，《元史》草率，惟《金史》行文雅洁，叙事简括，稍为可观，然未有如《明史》之完善者。”
