无辐射跃迁是原子将激发所得的能量通过原子碰撞等形式交给周围环境（晶格）的过程。原子发射或吸收光子而从一个能级改变到另一个能级，则称为辐射跃迁。只有在原子的两个能级满足辐射跃迁选择定则的情况下，才能够在这两个能级间产生辐射跃迁。换句话说，原子发射或吸收光子，只能出现在某些特定能级之间。如果原子只是通过与外界碰撞的过程或其它与外界进行能量交换的过程而从一个能级改变到另一个能级，既不发射也不吸收光子，则称为无辐射跃迁。
