方伯是春秋时期的古汉语词汇，出自《礼记·王制》，原指一方诸侯之长，后泛指地方长官。周初，“天子建国，诸侯立家”，即天子分封诸侯国，诸侯分封卿大夫之家。天子在所分封的诸侯国中，委任王室功臣、懿亲为诸侯之长，代表王室镇抚一方，称为“方伯”。
