所谓敞车是指具有端壁、侧壁、地板而无车顶，向上敞开的货车，主要供运送煤炭、矿石、矿建物资、木材、钢材等大宗货物用，也可用来运送重量不大的机械设备。若在所装运的货物上蒙盖防水帆布或其他遮篷物后，可代替棚车承运怕雨淋的货物。因此敞车具有很大的通用性，在货车组成中数量最多，目前全路共有敞车约30万辆，约占货车总数的50%以上。
