明、清对文武官员及其先代妻室赠予爵位名号时，皇帝命令有诰命与敕命之分，五品以上授诰命，称诰封；六品以下授敕命，称敕封。诰命与敕命形如画卷，轴端一品用玉，二品用犀，三品与四品用裹金，五品以下用角。
惜乎这一演化没有完成，最后让位于诰命、敕命文种。
