排水井多用于表面弱透水层和下部强透水层均比较深厚的地基，或含水层成层性显著，夹有许多透镜体和强含水带的地基中。由于多数工程的堤基均为多层地基，地质条件复杂，因此在排渗措施的应用中以排水井的应用为广泛。其导渗原理是通过滤水管将来自坝体上游的渗透水流导入排水减压井内，阻止渗透水流往下游流动，以达到迅速降低压力水头，保护大坝的稳定和降低下游地下水位的目的。
