捕鸟蛛属于较原始之蜘蛛，其全身密生细毛。南美洲及北美洲的一些捕鸟蛛身上某些地方具一种刺激性的蛰毛，遇到老鼠等天敌便用后脚扫散这种自然的致痒粉。敌人的反应就像工人铺设织维玻璃毛毡后，全身会发痒。所以可使用这种护身方式，却未必有亚洲等地捕鸟蛛那么会咬。美洲捕鸟蛛，毒性因此常低于亚洲等地的。台湾仅在兰屿发现亚美阿蜘蛛（Yamiawatasei Kishida1928）一种。
