挥发分是指在隔绝空气的条件下，将煤在850±20摄氏度下加热7分钟，煤中的有机质和一部分矿物质就会分解成气体(如一氧化碳、甲烷等可燃气体)和液体溢出，溢出物减去煤中的水分即为挥发分。链条炉用煤的挥发分含量最好在20%以上。
